When we decided we wanted to start spotlighting a “Brewery of the Week” every Friday, Back Forty was a unanimous pick for our inaugural post. Back Forty Beer Company is a true craft beer pioneer in the state of Alabama, and we have thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow over the last five years. Back Forty’s humble, grassroots beginning, their focus on a unique, quality product, and their commitment to giving back to the community epitomizes what the Southern craft beer culture is all about.
Back Forty began as a passion project in 2008 and soon thereafter released their first beer to the public, the Naked Pig Pale Ale. Originally, Back Forty’s brewing was contracted by another southern brewery, but in January of 2012 they offered their first production batch brewed in-house from their current brewery location in downtown Gadsden, AL. Back Forty now features a spacious taproom with ample seating and a decent sized patio for outdoor sipping when the weather is nice.
Back Forty has always brewed with a unique focus on beer-food pairings, and even provides suggested meals on their beer labels. Recently, they have opened the ‘Back Forty Test Kitchen’, where they will serve locally sourced meals on Friday and Saturday evenings. We can’t wait to make it up to Gadsden for a meal at Back Forty!
Fortunately for us, Back Forty’s distribution has expanded significantly over the last few years and is currently available in parts of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Florida. Back Forty Beer is picking up quite a reputation with acclaimed chef’s throughout the Southeast and can often be found even in upscale restaurants and bars. The Craft Crawler staff favorite is the Freckle Belly IPA, but we are also big fans of their variety 12 pack.
You can’t go wrong with Back Forty Beer , honestly. These folks are awesome and we are proud to have them as neighbors.
